A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the teddy bear named Burke P. Bear, of Boyds Bears,
2 as Pennsylvania's ambassador for love, peace, fun and a cure
3 for cystic fibrosis and encouraging the citizens of
4 Pennsylvania to support efforts to find a cure for cystic
5 fibrosis.
6 WHEREAS, Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic
7 disease and affects the lungs and digestive system of children;
8 and
9 WHEREAS, Boyds Bears named a special teddy bear in its fall
10 1997 collection "Burke P. Bear" after Burke Derr, a child who
11 collected teddy bears, who died on June 17, 1997, of cystic
12 fibrosis; and
13 WHEREAS, Over 134 retailers of Boyds Bears in Pennsylvania,
14 30 other states and Canada have been donating $1 from every
15 Burke P. Bear sold to Pennsylvania Cystic Fibrosis, Inc.; and
1 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania Cystic Fibrosis, Inc., has announced a
2 "Million Dollar Bear" nationwide campaign to raise awareness of
3 cystic fibrosis and raise funds for cystic fibrosis research;
4 and
5 WHEREAS, The goal of the campaign is to raise $1 million by
6 the end of 2000, the year in which Burke Derr would have
7 graduated from college; therefore be it
8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
9 teddy bear named Burke P. Bear, of Boyds Bears, as
10 Pennsylvania's ambassador for love, peace, having fun and curing
11 cystic fibrosis and encourage the citizens of Pennsylvania to
12 support efforts to find a cure for cystic fibrosis.
